Local Students Excel on National German Exam

Pentucket High School students in German 2H, 3 and 4 recently took the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) German National Exam and put forth an exemplary performance.

The AATG headquarters commended our students stating that among the 24,000 students who participated in the program this year, our students were among those few who were eligible for special Certificates of Merit from the AATG. They wrote “This achievement, in light of the large number of test participants, brings honor to the school district, your students, and your German program."

Level 3 students Nicholas Sawyer and Michael Guzelian were especially noted for their outstanding test performances. Nick scored in the 99th percentile and Mike’s score was in the 94th percentile nationwide and became eligible to win a 2-week study trip to Germany.
Other students who received a honorable mention are:

Emily Funk 86th percentile (German 2)
Tyne Darke 84th percentile (German 2)
Alexander Tarr 82nd percentile (German 3)
Jonathan Brenner 79th percentile (German 3)
Colleen Treado 75th percentile (German 3)
Alexandra Unger 75th percentile (German 4)
Miles Lockwood 70th percentile (German 2)

Please help us in congratulating these students on this wonderful achievement and commending them for their continued hard work.

Well done!

COURSE OFFERINGS

The department offers four years of study at the High School in French, German and Spanish.  Students starting in the 8th grade after Exploratory in the Middle School may thus take foreign languages for five years at Pentucket.   Emphasis is placed on all four-language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  History and culture also play an import role in the study of each of the three languages.

CLUBS

There are clubs for all three languages offered at the school and these organizations enable students to experience foreign language outside of the classroom.  Visits are made to the Greater Boston Area for concerts, ballet and theater performances, restaurants, museums, films and offerings by local institutions of higher learning

FOREIGN EXCHANGE

The school hosts foreign students every year from all over the globe.  Sometimes these students come through private organizations and often they make direct contact with the school through the Exchange Advisor, Mrs. Inge Berger.  In addition the GAPP  at Pentucket in hosting German students from our partner school in Leverkusen, Germany for three weeks.  Pentucket students then go to the partner school in Germany during the summer for three weeks in return.

HONOR SOCIETIES

There are honor societies for all foreign languages offered at Pentucket.  To be eligible for induction students must be in Level III or IV of the language and have attained an average of 3.6 in the language during the previous seven quarters of study.  They must also have attained a 3.0 overall average for their entire high school career prior to the average tabulation date.  Further details as to the criteria for membership are posted in foreign language classrooms or may be obtained from foreign language teachers.
